How to Save on Your Health Insurance Plan

It’s old news that health care is getting more expensive in the U.S. In fact, it’s about twice as expensive as it is in any other developed country. As a consumer, you can take steps to combat the growing cost by making informed decisions and knowing how to get the most out of your health plan.

Below is part five of a series of practical strategies you can use to save money on health care. Read about the other strategies by clicking on the links at the bottom of the blog.

Ask about generics

If you’re prescribed a brand name medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist if there’s a generic alternative available. Doing so can have a big impact on your overall cost for the drug.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the cost of a generic drug is 80 to 85 percent lower, on average, than the cost of a brand name drug. And, generic drugs use the exact same active ingredients, work the same and have the same benefits at a brand name.
