During the month of February, there is a lot of attention paid to matters of the heart. We celebrate Valentine’s Day, Black History Month, President’s Day, even Thank a Mailman Day.  Generally, February is the month of love, acceptance and appreciation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), coronary artery disease (narrowing of the arteries leading to the heart) is the only type of heart disease that takes the lives of men every year. Other types of heart disease include abnormal heart rhythms, heart failure, heart valve disease, congenital heart disease and pericardial disease to name a few.

Take these seven steps to lower your risk of heart disease.

  3. Eat better
  4. Manage blood pressure
  5. Lose weight
  6. Reduce blood sugar
  7. Stop smoking
