Many people remember their first vehicle. We’re not talking about the hand-me-down Cutlass or Ford, either. We’re talking about the two or three wheels that you may have received for a birthday or holiday that seemingly opened up a new world of transportation possibilities.
Since its invention by the great inventor (and notable cave painter) Urgh, the wheel has served to take us places our feet can’t faster than we could ever dream. Biking is a great way to take advantage of this invention’s potential.
During Bike to Work Month and on Bike to Work Day, we get to celebrate the humble bicycle and its profound impact on wellness, transportation and sustainability. After all, riding two wheels has several whole-body benefits which include the following.
As you can see, hopping on the bike holidays in May is a great way to experience a healthier and stronger summer.
Every year, Bike Month is celebrated in May, an excellent time for those of us in four-season climates. As we’ve seen this year, April can wind up being too cold and by June, well things might be too warm/sunny for safe biking throughout the day.
Annually observed on the third Friday in May, National Bike to Work Day falls on Friday, May 19, 2023. Next year, Bike to Work Day will be observed on Friday, May 17, 2024. By this time, summer has nearly arrived and we’re enjoying the best the first half of the year has to offer in Wisconsin.
If that’s enough biking for you, however, Wisconsin Bik Federation puts on a Wisconsin Bike Week every year which celebrates the unique bicycle culture of our home state. In 2023, Wisconsin Bike Week takes place between June 3, 2022, and June 10, 2023.
During this week, the chain-driven organization invites Wisconsinites to spend the week on two wheels and join a group ride throughout Wisconsin’s thousands of miles of bike-friendly trails.
Observances like Bike Month, National Bike to Work Day and Wisconsin Bike Week remind us that our outdoors are vast and worth exploring on foot or any number of wheels. With abundant trails, lush forests, staggering glacial geography and beautiful lakes, Wisconsin is a special place and one we’re glad to call home.
