Life After Your Diabetes Diagnosis

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that almost 10 percent of the U.S. population has diabetes.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects how your body turns food into energy. Living healthy with diabetes includes regular evaluation of your diabetes with your personal doctor. This should include annual HgbA1c blood tests, monitoring kidney function, controlling blood pressure, annual dilated eye exams and monitoring medication effectiveness.

Tips for conquering and even reversing diabetes

Conquering diabetes and living well requires some basic guidelines that you and your personal doctor can individualize to your specific needs.

Eat Right

  • Eat smaller portions, less fat and limit foods that are high in sugar and saturated fats
  • Eat more fiber, whole grains, fruits and vegetables

Be Active

  • Try to get at least 20 minutes of moderate-intense physical activity, five or more days per week
  • Start exercising slowly and work your way up as tolerated

Be Prepared

  • Have an emergency plan, which should include a list of your health problems, medications, allergies, personal doctor and emergency contact information
  • Stay hydrated and keep a source of sugar with you always, such as glucagon

Prevention is the key to maintaining your health. This includes being consistent with regular doctor visits, blood tests, annual eye exams, weekly foot exams, recommended vaccines and carefully monitoring any acute illnesses.

Effectively managing diabetes is possible and can save you money, time and improve your overall health. Setting up a diabetes action plan with your personal doctor can help minimize complications and improve your lifestyle.
