Sunny days are here again and it’s a great time to get outside and enjoy the fresh air.
Warmer weather inspires many of us to be more active. Regular physical activity is an effective way of improving your health and decreasing your risk of chronic illness and injuries related to falls. Physical activity can also decrease stress and promote mental well-being.
An important first step is talking to your doctor about your current physical health and level of physical activity. Your personal doctor can calculate your body mass index (BMI) by measuring your weight and height, and determine whether your BMI is within a healthy range. Together you can discuss what changes to your exercise plan might help maintain or improve your physical health, and what benefits you might expect from regular physical activity. Your personal doctor can also assess your risk of falling to determine whether a Physical Therapist would be helpful in teaching you safe and effective exercises.
After speaking with your personal doctor, check into local resources for motivation. Community gardening, walking and cycling clubs all offer great opportunities to get moving and enjoy the beautiful spring weather.
