The Right Fit for an Active Life

Healthy Jumpstart

Being active is essential for good health. Living a sedentary lifestyle results in an increased risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, anxiety, depression and even certain types of cancers. Making the decision to get active is one of the best ways to help prevent disease and improve your overall well-being. But, it’s not always easy to know where to start.

When Anne Rappert made the decision to get active, she knew she would need some help. Together, Anne and her health coaches, Sam Schnell and Julie Cleaves, would create a fitness plan to help Anne achieve her goals. But, before she could get started with her new workout routine, Anne needed the right gear to help her avoid injuries.

One of the biggest obstacles to getting and staying active is injuries. Luckily, there are steps you can take to avoid getting sidelined. And, being fitted with the right shoes is a great first step. Last month, Anne, Sam and Julie went to Fleet Feet Sports to make sure Anne had shoes that would help her on her wellness journey.

Anne met with Fleet Feet’s owner, Jeremy Schapiro, for the shoe fitting. In the beginning, Anne was a little bit nervous to have a group of people watching her, but Jeremy put her right at ease. To help make sure each customer is fitted with the right shoes, Fleet Feet takes a very thorough approach. First, Jeremy asked Anne what her goals were. Anne explained she wasn’t a runner (yet), and was just looking for a shoe that she’d be wearing for all sorts of new activities. She planned on heading to the gym, as well as playing basketball with her kids.

Jeremy was enthusiastic about helping Anne achieve her new activity goals. He made a few recommendations based on her input. He explained to her Fleet Feet’s process. “Whether you try on a couple pairs of shoes or eight, we will work with you to find that right match. From getting them on to lacing them up the right way, we’re here through the whole thing.”

Anne was impressed with Jeremy’s approach. “I really didn’t know what to expect and have never had undivided attention like that before when buying a pair of tennis shoes. Jeremy was very knowledgeable and friendly. The shoes feel great.”

Anne’s health coaches were also impressed. Julie explained, “I liked that they tried a few different moderate stability shoes which is what Anne was looking for. With walking and possibly running in the near future, they were able to narrow down the type of shoe needed. Then, Jeremy watched her gait and pronation. They tried on three different pairs which allowed her to feel the difference and see what worked well.”

Sam was very pleased with Anne’s experience, too. “This shoe fitting was above and beyond what I was expecting. When watching Anne at Fleet Feet, they took her through so many different tests to ensure that she was going to be fitted for the proper shoe. I love that she was taken care of and felt comfortable throughout the whole process.”

After purchasing her new shoes, Anne was excited to get moving. She made plans to participate in one of Fleet Feet’s training programs. Jeremy was happy to help Anne on her wellness journey and wanted to offer more support. He not only provided Anne with the insoles for her new shoes, but offered two gift certificates for the training program. Anne will be using one and she is offering the other program to a lucky supporter.

Leave an inspirational message below and you will be automatically entered into a drawing for the Fleet Feet Training Program Gift Certificate. The program has a $60-$100 value (depending on which program you pick) and you can learn more about the training programs here.

So proud of Anne and her progress. Now she has taken another “big step” with getting the right shoes to help her continue her journey. Excited for you, Anne. Keep up the great work!

I love Fleet Feet. I’m not much of a runner, but I used to get terrible shin splints even just going for a long walk. Turns out, I needed more stability in my shoes, and a very affordable soft insert did the trick. It can be intimidating walking into a running store if you’re not a runner. Everyone at Fleet Feet has been super helpful and very welcoming. I even brought my mom in to get a pair of shoes when she was experiencing a lot of knee pain at work. She’s on her feet all day, and better quality shoes help her stay active, too.
